Save 20% on fuel ~ Rolls-Royce will install energy management system for Havila fleet

Rolls-Royce recently received a contract to install its next-generation energy management system (EMS) contract for nine ships of the Havila Shipping fleet, including four three-purpose workboats (AHTS), four Platform Supply Vessel (PSV) and a Rescue and Recycling Vessel (RRV).

As part of a series of Ship Intelligent Asset Management (IAM) products, Rolls-Royce's energy management system was launched in November 2017 and has been installed on more than 50 ships to date.

A key benefit of this energy management system is that the crew of a ship can see the fuel consumption of the running engine in real time in order to make the necessary operational changes to reduce the need for fuel. Among other things, the energy management system's sensors will estimate fuel consumption for the relationship between ship speed, electrical load, and propeller pitch and revolutions per minute. Existing dynamic positioning (DP) sensors will also be used to calculate the effects of external forces - wind speed and wave forces - on the ship. The system also shows how the ship's navigational parameters affect fuel consumption. The data collected by the sensor is then provided to the ship for secure encryption and processing. The data required to be reported will be transmitted over the connection to a secure portal managed by Rolls-Roy, where more detailed historical analysis and comparisons can be made.

While it is too early to assess the operational and performance data of energy management systems installed on Havila ships, Rolls-Royce's energy management system users have reported fuel savings of up to 20% per year.
