Global commercial shipping ship tonnage 96.6% ~ This country joins the MARPOL Treaty

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has become a country that has joined the International Maritime Organization (IMO) rules to prevent air pollution and energy conservation requirements for ships.

IMO stated in a statement that the total tonnage of the members of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) Annexes VI to 93 has reached 96.6% of the world's commercial shipping vessel tonnage.

Appendix VI of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships will limit the main air pollutants contained in ship exhaust, including sulfur oxides (SOx) and nitrogen oxides (NOx), and prohibit the deliberate discharge of ozone-depleting substances (ODS). The Convention also includes energy-saving measures aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions from ships.

On 20 February, Ms. Rawdha Al Otaiba, Deputy Head of the United Arab Emirates Mission in the United Kingdom, met with United Nations Secretary-General Kitack Lim at the International Maritime Organization Headquarters in London and submitted the accession letter.

Appendix VI of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, adopted in 1997, will limit the main internal air pollutants contained in the ship's exhaust gases, including sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides, and prohibit the deliberate discharge of ozone-depleting substances.

Appendix V of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships also regulates the incineration of ships and the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from tankers.
